Vinyl never fully left India. The presses at Dum Dum may have slowed in the 1980s, but the records themselves went into cupboards, lofts, and radio-station storerooms, and they are surfacing again into a young, growing collector market. If you want in, this is the map we wish someone had handed us.
Start with what you love, not what appreciates
The fastest way to a dead collection is buying what lists say you should own. The records you will actually play are the ones connected to something: your parents' Rafi evenings, the disco your uncle claims he attended, the first English album you heard on tape. Collect from memory outward. Value follows attention anyway; the records people love are the ones that hold price.
Where records come from in India
- Curated shops like ours clean, grade, and price records individually. You pay for the curation, and in exchange, the record plays when you get home.
- Flea markets and scrap dealers in every major city still turn up crates. Prices are low and so is the hit rate: expect uncleaned records, sun-baked sleeves, and no returns.
- Family collections are the best source in the country. Ask relatives before buying strangers' records; the stories come free.
- Online marketplaces span everything from serious dealers to sellers photographing a record they cannot name. Study the photos, ask for the catalogue number, and factor in shipping risk.
What things cost, roughly
A common Hindi film LP in ordinary condition trades for a few hundred rupees at street level and a bit more cleaned and graded. Strong titles, popular artists, and international pressings run into the low thousands. First pressings of landmark soundtracks and genuinely scarce records go far higher, and there the details, label variant and catalogue number and condition, decide everything. If a price looks too good for the title, the condition is the reason.
Five beginner mistakes to skip
- Buying without a working player. Records pile up fast; get sound first.
- Judging by the sleeve. Sleeves and records live different lives. Always ask about the vinyl grade, not just the cover.
- Ignoring pressing details. An Indian first pressing and a later reissue can look nearly identical and differ several times over in value.
- Bulk-buying crates. Fifty unplayable records teach less than five good ones.
- Storing flat, in heat. Indian summers warp stacked records in one season. Vertical, indoors, away from sun.
Learn the vocabulary early

Your first five records
Our honest suggestion: one film soundtrack from your family's era, one ghazal or devotional record for late evenings, one international classic, one instrumental record for daytime, and one pure gamble from a crate somewhere. That spread teaches you what you actually enjoy, which is the only research that matters.
The collection you want is not built in a weekend. It accumulates, record by record, each one arriving with a story attached. Start with one that means something, play it tonight, and let the shelf grow from there.
