Flip through any substantial Indian record collection assembled in the 1960s and 70s and he will be there: Mantovani, usually several albums deep. The Anglo-Italian conductor built the most successful light-orchestral catalogue of the vinyl era, and India bought it enthusiastically. Dismissed for decades as background music, these records are enjoying a quiet reappraisal, and our easy listening shelf holds one of the healthiest Mantovani runs in Kerala.
The sound with a patent
The signature is instantly recognisable: melodies dissolving into waterfalls of overlapping strings, each phrase handed down through the violin sections like water over terraced stones. The "cascading strings" effect was engineered deliberately, developed with arranger Ronald Binge and unveiled on the 1951 recording of Charmaine that made Mantovani a global brand. It was orchestration designed for the microphone rather than the concert hall, and it made him, by common account, the first artist to sell a million stereo LPs: his lush textures were practically a demonstration disc for the new format.
The travelogue albums
Mantovani's catalogue is organised like a luxury itinerary, and our crates read like his passport: In Europe, In Hollywood, In Paris, In Italy, In Vienna, In Mexico. Each applies the cascading treatment to a destination's songbook. They were the sound of aspiration in middle-class homes worldwide, India very much included: the Decca pressings arrived through official channels and returning travellers alike, and became shorthand for cosmopolitan taste alongside the family's film soundtracks.

Why India loved him
The affinity makes musical sense. Indian film orchestration of the golden age shared Mantovani's values: massed strings, melody above all, arrangement as emotion engineering. A household that loved Shankar Jaikishan's sweep had ears pre-tuned for the cascading strings. The records also carried no language barrier and no cultural translation cost: they were sophistication you could play for any guest.
Collecting him today
- Condition is the whole game. Supply is generous, so pay only for clean copies; a worn Mantovani has no scarcity to redeem it.
- Early Decca pressings sound superb. The label's engineering was famous, and these were audiophile showpieces of their day. A clean 1960s pressing remains a legitimate system test.
- Buy by destination. The travelogue titles are the fun of it; complete a wing of the itinerary.
- Stereo copies preferred. The cascading effect was built for stereo width; mono copies document the arrangement, stereo copies perform it.
