In millions of South Indian homes, the day has begun the same way for generations: with the Venkatesa Suprabhatam in the voice of M.S. Subbulakshmi. Very few musicians anywhere have had their recordings woven into daily ritual at that scale. Kunjamma of Madurai became MS, the most revered Carnatic vocalist of the century, the first musician awarded the Bharat Ratna, and, almost incidentally, one of the best-selling recording artists India has produced. Her vinyl is a category of its own, and our devotional shelf is built around it.
The voice as institution
Subbulakshmi's career ran from temple-town prodigy to the world's stages, including her celebrated 1966 performance at the United Nations. Her gift was a combination the microphone loved: classical perfection delivered with complete devotional transparency. Nehru famously called himself a mere prime minister before the queen of song. What the reverence can obscure is how good the records are simply as records: immaculate intonation, weightless ornamentation, and a presence that survives any playback chain.
The records, by role
Her vinyl catalogue divides by function, which is unusual and wonderful.
The morning records. The Suprabhatam recordings, the awakening hymn to Venkateswara, are the most played discs in the South Indian devotional canon. Copies did daily duty for decades, which makes clean survivors scarcer than sales figures would suggest.
The chant records. Bhaja Govindam and Vishnu Sahasranamam, Adi Shankara's hymn and the thousand names of Vishnu, on one disc in our crates: liturgy rendered with concert-hall discipline, and perhaps the single most gifted record in South Indian wedding history.
The bhakti poetry. Her Meera Bhajans connect her to the same saint-poet repertoire Lata recorded in the North, two traditions honouring the same poetry, and the comparison across our shelves is a joy in itself.
The temple series. Multi-volume projects like the Sri Venkateswara Pancharatna Mala, several volumes of which we hold, and the Annamacharya sankeertana recordings, part of a deliberate mid-century effort to set the Tirumala composer's rediscovered corpus in her voice, one of them a first pressing in our crates.

Collecting notes
- Play-wear is the story. These records were used, daily and lovingly. Inspect inner grooves and expect honest wear on morning-ritual titles; prize the copies that escaped the routine.
- Volumes want completing. The temple series were issued in numbered volumes; matched runs carry a premium over strays.
- First pressings exist here too. Devotional catalogues were repressed for decades; catalogue numbers and label variants date copies exactly as with film music.
- The undervaluation is closing. Devotional vinyl long traded below film material; MS records, with their international stature, are leading the correction.
Her records are the rare intersection of the sacred and the collectable: objects that were simultaneously music, liturgy, and furniture of family life. We keep the devotional shelf stocked with as much MS as the crates surrender, and the Suprabhatam, as ever, goes first.
