In 1964 Raj Kapoor bet bigger than Indian cinema had ever bet: his first colour film, shot partly in Europe when foreign locations were still a novelty, running nearly four hours with two intervals, telling a love triangle sized like a national event. Sangam repaid the bet historically, and its Shankar Jaikishan soundtrack became one of the defining records of the decade. We hold it in two original copies, both in our First Pressings section, which gives us an unusually good vantage point on what this record is.
The score of the spectacle
Shankar Jaikishan met the film's scale head-on. Dost Dost Na Raha, Mukesh voicing betrayal over a slow, devastating build, may be the duo's single most covered composition. Bol Radha Bol and Main Ka Karoon Ram gave the film its playfulness; Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega its sweep; and the European interludes let the arrangers indulge the cosmopolitan streak that always ran under their orchestral Hindi style. Lata, Rafi, and Mukesh divide the emotional labour the way only that generation could.

Why originals rank so high
The 1964 originals carry every value factor at strength. The film is permanently canonical; the songs never left circulation; and original-era copies did heavy family duty for decades, thinning clean survivors exactly as our Bollywood collecting guide describes. Dealer markets accordingly place verified Sangam originals among the top tier of soundtrack collecting, alongside the Naushad monuments, and the price gap between originals and later reissues is as wide as anywhere in the catalogue.
Holding two copies lets us say something dealers rarely can: even between two originals, condition and stamper details differentiate, which is why each of our listings documents its own evidence rather than borrowing the other's.

The identification notes
Originals resolve through the standard three witnesses: the catalogue series of the era, the label variant matching the release window, and deadwax consistent with early metal. The reissue history is long, and artwork alone will mislead: the sleeve was reproduced across decades. The listening advice
Side one, evening, volume honest. Dost Dost Na Raha lands hardest when the room is quiet enough for Mukesh's restraint to do its work; sixty years of cover versions have never improved on the original's patience. And when the European travelogue numbers arrive, remember what audiences in 1964 were hearing: the world, in colour, for the first time, with an orchestra insisting it belonged to them.
